Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life. (James 1:12)
  • Humanity should:

    Resist temptation, in faith
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6:16)

Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (1 Peter 5:9)

    Watch against temptation
"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." (Matthew 26:41)

    Be self-controlled and alert.
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

Pray to be kept from temptation
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. (Matthew 6:13)

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." (Matthew 26:41)

    Not tempt others
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. (Romans 14:13)

    Restore those overcome by temptation
Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. (Galatians 6:1)

    Avoid the way of temptation
Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. (Proverbs 4:14,15)
  • God will make ways to escape temptation
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
  • God knows how to deliver from temptation
If this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.(2 Peter 2:9)
  • Jesus is faithful against temptation
Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. (Revelation 3:10)
  • Blessed are those who who meet and overcome temptation
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:2,3,4,12)

  • Temptation does not come from God
When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone. (James 1:13)

  • Temptation comes from:

    Lusts
but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. (James 1:14)

    Covetousness
A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. (Proverbs 28:20)

People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:9,10)

  • The devil is the author of temptation

Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. (1 Chronicles 21:1)

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. (Matthew 4:1)

The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. (John 13:2)

For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless. (1 Thessalonians 3:5)

  • Evil associates are the instruments of temptation
My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. (Proverbs 1:10)

At the window of my house I looked out through the lattice. (Proverbs 7:6)

A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path that is not good. (Proverbs 16:29)

  • Temptation often arises through:

    Poverty
Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:9)
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." (Matthew 4:2,3)

    Prosperity
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the LORD ?' (Proverbs 30:9)

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. (Matthew 4:8)

  • Temptation often ends in sin and perdition
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. (1 Timothy 6:9)

Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:15)

  • Jesus Christ..

    ...endured temptation from the devil

And he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. (Mark 1:13)

    ...endured temptation from the wicked

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. (Matthew 16:1)

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?" (Matthew 22:18)

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 10:25)

    ...overcame temptation

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" (Matthew 4:4-10)

    ...sympathises with those under temptation

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

...is able to help those under temptation

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)

...intercedes for his people under temptation

"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." (Luke 22:31,32)

My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. (John 17:15)
